Slammed door: 5 things to check before calling a locksmith
Keys inside, the door slammed behind you: before panicking (and overpaying), here are the five right reflexes to get back in without damage.

A door that slams behind you, your keys still inside, and the evening falls apart. Don't panic: in the vast majority of cases, a simply slammed door can be opened without breaking anything and without breaking the bank. Here are the right reflexes, in order.
1. Check whether the door is "slammed", not locked
A slammed door is only held by the latch bolt, the small bevelled tongue that clicks into place on its own when you close it. A locked door, on the other hand, was shut with a key. That difference changes everything: a slammed door often opens in a few minutes, a locked one takes more work.
Gently try the handle: if the door "gives" slightly, that's a good sign.
2. Check the other ways in
Under stress, we often forget the obvious:
- A window or French door left ajar
- A spare key at a neighbour's, a relative's, the caretaker's
- Another entrance (cellar, garage, service door)
It's the fastest and cheapest solution. Always worth trying first.
3. Don't force it, don't improvise
The card slipped into the gap, the screwdriver in the cylinder, the lock taken apart… We see a lot of doors damaged by a DIY opening attempt. The result: a longer, more expensive job than at the start.
If nothing happens within a few seconds, stop. A clumsily forced lock can become impossible to save.
4. Put yourself in a safe situation
If it's cold, if it's late, or if a child or pet is left alone inside, say so clearly to the locksmith you call. A genuine emergency is handled as a priority.
5. Call — and ask the price BEFORE
This is the most important reflex. On the phone, an honest locksmith should be able to:
- ask you two or three simple questions (slammed or locked? armoured? lock brand?)
- quote a clear price before coming out
- confirm an arrival time
If they refuse to give a price, if the answer stays vague ("we'll see on site"), or if the price doubles once the door is open: that's not normal. That's exactly what we set out to change when we created Les Artisans Serruriers Porte-Bonheur.
The right price is the one quoted to you on the phone — and honoured on site.
A slammed door is almost never a disaster. By keeping a cool head and insisting on a clear quote, you avoid the stress… and the nasty surprise on the bill.
